The Crazy 8 started as a dream that I could do an ultra here on the island. I originally decided that I would be spending too much money on myself to do the Everglades Ultra. Little did I know that my AUTEC friends would surprise me with a trip to do the race! Thankfully, I had timed the Crazy 8 so that it would be a great training run for me, Christine, and Lisa (all doing the Everglades race).
The Crazy 8 relay was held on Saturday, January 17th 2015. The weather was beautiful - sunny with a cool breeze. The course was a 3.8 mile loop around base, winding along the roads and trails starting and finishing at my trailer. Participants had a choice to do it solo for any length of time or as a relay team. They could run, walk or bike the course. People filtered in and out throughout the day with a final tally of 46 participants! 24 racers completed 1 loop, while 22 managed 2 or more loops.
During the race we had food, drinks, and music at the start/finish area. After the race, there was a pot-luck where everyone could refuel and chat about their accomplishments.
I couldn't have done this without my volunteers. Thanks go to: Cynthia for use of her tent; Mark, Kate, Kathy, and Laurie for timing; Kate for her plastic chairs; Kelly for yarn and paper for the signs; Everyone who brought a dish; And of course my Assistant Race Director - Miah who was up at 6 am, getting ice, setting up the tent, grilling and all of the other little things he does to help it run smoothly.
As for results, it is difficult to pick a winner since everyone did different things. Tausha Beins had the most laps with 6 full loops and a short loop. Lisa Leggett had the most distance running or walking with 5 loops plus a short loop. Frodo had the fastest time for a full loop with a time of 28:42. Great job to everyone!
