Today was a gorgeous day for a run. It was the perfect temp, nice and sunny with a cool breeze. The miles flew by. I had 10 miles on the schedule today and I managed to run the whole thing. This would normally not be so exciting but with all of my setbacks this training period, I'm just thankful that I can run.
The first setback was a very bad flu, which caused me to lose a week. I barely got back to running and I bruised the bottom of my left foot. I took a few days off and it was feeling better. I played a game of softball and hurt my right ankle. A few days later, I did a 14 mile run and the bruise on my left foot seemed fine, but my right foot felt terrible the whole way. The next day, on my 8 mile run, my right foot was killing me but I was dealing with it. I ended up stepping on another rock with my left foot. I continued to run because I thought it was just a bruise. What a awful run! The next day, my left foot was swollen. Although the x-ray didn't show anything conclusive, it might have been a stress fracture. I took off 3 weeks - 3 lonnnngggg weeks. Thank goodness for the elliptical and swimming! When I started to run again, my right foot/ankle still hurt, which I had to wait another week.
Now that I'm back running, I don't have very long to up my mileage. I'm doing a combination of running and elliptical so that I don't over-train and end up with another injury. I have to say, that although I appreciate the fact that I have access to an elliptical, 1 hour on the elliptical is like 100 eternities. Today's 10 mile run without any elliptical time was just magical!
