The day of the Turkey Trot, November 22nd started out gray, windy and rainy. I was beginning to think that I would be the only one at the race. Thankfully, by 8:30 the rain had subsided so I set up at the school pavilion. To my surprise, there ended up being a total of 20 participants. After a brief description of the HF-MB trail (Haunted Forest-Marine Beach trail) and a few pictures, we were off and running.
The course wraps around the softball field, down the dirt road behind the Bonefish Court trailers, along the main road, to the Haunted Forest trails. We exit the Haunted Forest and continue toward 1st Street, running behind the trailers on a dirt road, to Perimeter Road going toward Marine Beach. After running up the “big” hill, the course cuts onto the trail at Marine Beach all the way to the picnic tables. Then we turned around and did the course in reverse. Thankfully no one was hopelessly lost. The total distance was 3.77 according to one person’s interpretation of the course.
The weather was definitely a factor in the event. The wind pushed against us on the long stretch toward Marine Beach making it seem much harder. Plus the rain started again at about 9:30, while most of the participants were still out on the trail. Thankfully, we are in the Bahamas where rain in November isn’t that cold!
Rich won first place while Mark Gelzinis and I sprinted to a photo finish in second and third. Toni Tisch secured the raffle prize, winning a hand held water bottle.
